Talk to a trained professional as soon as you call! We are always excited to hear from new parents and we're here to answer your questions about foster care.

We understand that you want to know more about becoming a foster parent. That's why we started a blog that is dedicated to helping you on your journey of foster parenting.

Children in T.I.I.'s foster care treatment program are in need of loving, caring parents. Many of the children in our care have experienced traumatic life circumstances, abuse, and/or neglect. Often times, children struggle with difficult emotions that require professional parenting skills. Our foster parents exceed general training requirements so that they are empowered to help children with specific needs. Child-specific training topics are taught in a focused curriculum that addresses individual behaviors and/or conditions of children. We want to teach you about parenting children in foster care to promote your success as a therapeutic foster parent.

Find out more about therapeutic foster parenting by viewing our first blog post. Our goal is to provide you with helpful information so that you feel prepared to help children in foster care!

In Tennessee, pre-parenting classes are required to become a foster and/or adoptive parent. Parents As Tender Healers (P.A.T.H.) training sessions will help prepare you for the rewarding and challenging journey of foster parenting!

ABOUT THERAPEUTIC TRAINING

Training topics are provided by T.I.I. to focus on the specific needs and behaviors of children in our care. In addition to a targeted, child-specific therapeutic training curriculum, our trainers customize therapeutic training hours to help parents learn more about conditions and behaviors of children whom they wish to provide care. For example, if a foster parent applicant wishes to parent children that have been diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, autism, depression, or oppositional-defiant-disorder, etc.,  trainers will customize therapeutic sessions to focus on those conditions.

Along with providing information about any child-specific topics, trainers at T.I.I. help parents learn about parenting techniques that are effective for children that display specific behaviors or have specific diagnosis. Every child is different, every parent is different. Children and parents develop positive relationships when efforts are made to learn about each other! By learning about children in foster care, you'll feel better prepared to help children who enter your home and heart.

Therapeutic training hours are not intended to be inconvenient for new foster parent applicants. These additional training hours promote better parenting skills and higher levels of confidence in parenting children in T.I.I.'s program. Our trainers will assist you by making sure you have all the information you need to successfully parent children in our program.

WHY ALL THE TRAINING REQUIREMENTS? I JUST WANT TO HELP KIDS!
We've heard that before, here at Therapeutic Interventions, Inc.
It's a common reaction from many foster parent applicants and we can relate to your frustrations about training requirements. We promise it won't be that bad. We are thankful for the calls we receive from individuals who want to help children in foster care. Most applicants just want to help children. Many applicants have thought about becoming a foster parent for years before we receive a call from them. Sometimes, they're not excited about the extensive requirements of becoming a foster parent. Here's the way we respond to answer your question....
Training requirements are intended to prepare you for parenting, inform you about foster care, and teach you about the specific needs of children in the child welfare system. We understand that attending training classes isn't always convenient with your hectic schedules...which is why-

T.I.I. provides small group classes and individualized trainings for those unable to attend our large group sessions!
We know that our foster parent applicants are busy people. We are, too! T.I.I. is one of the few agencies that are able to accommodate parents who require individualized or in-home training sessions. We ask that all parents attend group training classes, whenever possible. Still, we aren't going to lessen opportunities for working parents or others who have circumstances that prevent them from attending our large-group courses. If you are unable to attend our group sessions, we're willing to work with you! We strive to make accommodations for parents who require training sessions on a more personal basis. Explain your circumstances or life situation to our trainers and they'll adapt to your needs! T.I.I. trainers believe that group training sessions are more beneficial for resource parents but can work with parents who are unable to attend the large class courses. Show us your commitment and we'll show you ours! If you require small group classes, specific dates and times for training, or individualized courses- call T.I.I. today! Schedule your first Orientation class to become a therapeutic foster parent!

GOOD!
We’re here to answer your questions about foster parenting!
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT FOSTER PARENTING ARE FREQUENTLY ANSWERED BY STAFF AT THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS, INCORPORATED.
     ASK AWAY!

HERE ARE SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT FOSTER PARENTING THAT WE HOPE TO ANSWER:

WHAT IS THERAPEUTIC FOSTER PARENTING?

Therapeutic foster parenting primarily involves parenting children whose needs and behaviors require professional parents. Therapeutic foster parents excel in working with children whose behaviors and/or conditions have resulted from traumatic life experiences, often beyond their control. Children in T.I.I.'s program receive specialized services and individualized treatment that meets the specific needs of each child. The difference in therapeutic foster parenting and what is often referred to as 'regular' foster parenting is that therapeutic parents are trained to effectively nurture children in therapeutic foster care. T.I.I. and other provider agencies provide services to children that require therapeutic care. These children are not currently served by The Tennessee Department of Children's Services.  D.C.S. works in partnership with agencies like T.I.I. to identify therapeutic homes and therapeutic parenting professionals that are capable of working with therapeutically-classified youth.

What are the youth in therapeutic foster care like?

Children and teens in therapeutic foster care are youths that have often experienced traumatic life circumstances beyond their control. These experiences often result from situations of abuse and neglect and survival behaviors can develop as a result. Children in therapeutic foster care are youths that need professional parents that are skilled in helping them overcome difficult feelings and behaviors associated with trauma. With the help of T.I.I.'s child-specific treatment plan and individualized approach, foster parents are empowered to successfully parent therapeutic children.

How old are the children in T.I.I.’s program?
Therapeutic Interventions, Inc.
admits children into our program that are between the ages of birth and 18 years old. We specialize in providing services for adolescents and teenagers and the need for foster parents for this age range is tremendous. We also admit children into our program that are between the ages of birth and 12 years old, although these children often have older siblings that need a home, too. There is currently a severe shortage of foster parents in Tennessee who are willing to open their home to adolescent youth and teenagers. These children deserve safe and loving homes. Younger children in state custody deserve the opportunity to be placed in a foster home with their older siblings.
You can help!
Teenagers need positive mentors to learn independent living skills and achieve better opportunities in life. T.I.I. serves all age ranges of youth in therapeutic foster care and is actively seeking foster parents for adolescents and teenagers.
